How the electric bikes work?

The bike is driven by an electric motor, which is powered by a re-chargeable battery, housed on the vehicle itself.

Key Components - Motor

In general electric bikes use wheel-hub DC motors which are of brushless DC hub motors. This is either fixed in the front or rear wheel. The size of the motor varies with the power of the bike such as 250w, 500w or 800w. Motors are rated in terms of voltage and output power (Watts). There are two categories of Motors,

BDC - Brushed DC Motors

BLDC - Brushless DC Motors

Ampere bikes come with brushless DC motors.

Battery

The function of the battery in a vehicle is to store and supply electricity. When the vehicle is used, the motor uses the electrical energy from the battery. As a result the battery’s stored electrical energy depletes. This discharged battery can be recharged using the normal house-hold AC (Alternate Current) with the help of a charger. The ampere-hour rating of a battery determines the storage capacity of electrical charge in that battery. The AH is a measurement of current - 1 AH means the battery can supply 1 amp of current continuously for 1 hr. One full charge provides a ride of up to 50 to 70 km depending on the various vehicle models and on normal driving and road conditions. Battery is crucial in maintaining the performance of the vehicle and therefore proper maintenance of the battery is very important.

Controller

The controller is the brain centre of the electric vehicle managed by a 16-bit microprocessor. Based on the actions of the accelerator, the controller allows the flow of electric power to the motor. This enables step-less speed regulation of the motor.
The controller system includes

  • Dynamic motor optimization
  • Battery under-voltage protection
  • Over-current protection
  • Brake with power cut-off
  • Electricity Indicator
  • Step-less speed regulation and more
